In the digital age, knowledge-based companies face numerous challenges in innovation and competition. These companies need to create a cohesive innovation ecosystem to survive and maintain their market position, which can continuously generate and market innovations. In this regard, knowledge management is recognized as a key element in creating these ecosystems. Knowledge management includes processes for collecting, organizing, sharing, and using knowledge within an organization, which can help companies innovate and become more competitive. The primary objective of this research is to design a digital open innovation ecosystem within the framework of knowledge management in knowledge-based companies in the city of Semnan. This study uses a qualitative approach based on grounded theory to identify factors that influence the creation and development of these ecosystems. Using this approach, an operational framework is provided for policymakers and managers of knowledge-based companies to create and develop innovation ecosystems in digital environments.
This research employs a qualitative approach based on grounded theory. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 11 research and product development managers and market development managers in Semnan's knowledge-based companies. Participants were selected using purposive and judgmental sampling, and interviews continued until theoretical saturation was achieved.
Data analysis followed Strauss and Corbin's systematic approach, involving three stages: open, axial, and selective coding. In the open coding stage, data were converted into open codes. Then, in the axial coding stage, these codes were transformed into subcategories and main categories. Finally, in the selective coding stage, the main categories were identified. This process resulted in the identification of 169 open codes, 49 subcategories, and 11 main categories.
The validity of the research was ensured through member checking, and reliability was confirmed by calculating the inter-coder agreement coefficient between two independent coders. In this process, two independent coders coded the data, and then the agreement between them was calculated. This process ensured the accuracy and validity of the research results.
The results of this research show that "Digital Knowledge Integration" serves as the core phenomenon, influenced by causal factors (such as leveraging new technologies like artificial intelligence, developing infrastructure, and training human resources), contextual factors (such as management support and fostering a culture of innovation), and intervening factors (such as information security and protection of intellectual property rights). The main strategies for creating and developing digital open innovation ecosystems include network collaborations, inter-organizational knowledge exchange, and strengthening research and development systems. These strategies lead to outcomes such as sustainable growth, reduced innovation costs, and accelerated product development. Digital Convergence in Knowledge Processes constitutes the core category, forming the fundamental principle of the emergent theory. This concept demonstrates how digital technologies can converge knowledge processes and contribute to innovation and competitiveness in companies.
The results of this research provide an operational framework for policymakers and managers of knowledge-based companies to create and develop innovation ecosystems in digital environments. This framework includes identifying factors that influence the creation and development of digital open innovation ecosystems and presenting main strategies to achieve this goal. By using this framework, knowledge-based companies can continuously generate innovations and market them, successfully competing with other companies.
